Trip to the Auckland Museum - 25 May 2021
What a great trip we had today at the Auckland Museum.
When we arrived we had our morning tea and then we went on a guided tour looking at parts of the museum with our parents. We had lunch and the students enjoyed sharing their experiences of the museum with each other. After lunch we met one of the educators near the Maori meeting house.
We found out:
*a wharenui is built to remember ancestors
*at the top of the wharenui it said 'Hotunui'
*an action song for each part of the wharenui
*the wharenui had two hearts which are the poles inside
*tukutuku panels are made from flax
*patiki panels are diamonds shapes that represent food, the flounder fish
*poutama panels represent the stairs
*kaokao panels represent the arms
*mumu panels represent waving of family together
We walked around the wharenui with our parents and found the different tukutuku panels. Then we were shown how the Maori people weave and in pairs we did some weaving.
After that we walked around with our parents and had another guided tour then we went to the bus and arrived back at Point View School.
What a fabulous day we all had, I am sure we will all sleep really well!
