Mangere Mountain

What an amazing trip we had to Mangere Mountain!
We met our guide and he told us that there are 50 volcanoes in Auckland.  The newest volcano is Rangitoto Island and it erupted six hundred years ago.  The oldest volcano in Auckalnd is Lake Pupuke and it is two hundred and fifty thousand years old!!!  Mangere Mountain is twenty thousand years old.
We climbed up the mountain and looked at other mountains in the distance.  It was a very exciting walk as we got to go inside a crater.  We could see lots of different rocks that were on the ground.

Enjoy the photos

Inquiry Learning - Volcanoes

The children thought about what they would like to find out about volcanoes.  They formed small groups and each group had a question.  The children were given some information about volcanoes and they had to underline the answer to their question.  Then they used keynote to record their information on the computer.  When they completed this they found a picture to illustrate their findings.

Volcano Art

What fun the children had designing their own volcanoes.
First they used tissue paper and glued it onto their mountain.

Next they painted their volcanoes and then painted a background colour.
Then they decorated their volcanoes with lots of different materials.
Some of the finished work - WOW!!!!!!

Comprehension - Part 2

Comprehension
We have been focusing on comprehension.
After reading a specific book we look at a variety of strategies to support our understanding of the story.
Here are some charts that we have designed together.
Computer savvy at 94
We read an article about a 94 year old man who is enjoying working on the computer.  We focused on the important parts of the article and recorded the information as a class.

Cybersafety

Room 4 have been talking about how to keep safe when using the internet.  We have enjoyed watching 'Hector's World' as each video has an important message for us to remember.
If you would like to watch these videos as a family please go to the classroom wiki and click on integrated studies.  I am sure the children will be able to tell you some important rules to remember.
The videos are titled:
*Episode 1 - Details, Details
*Episode 2 - Welcome to the Carnival
*Episode 3 - It's a Serious Game
*Episode 4 - The Info Gang
*Episode 5 - Heroes
*Interactive Episode - Cyberbullying: You're Not Alone

Enjoy!

We made a chart showing some important rules to remember when using the computer.

The children in Room 4 had the opportunity to design a list of rules that were important to them.  Then they completed the list with a closing sentence.
