Technology with Mr Rankin - 27 July 2018

Technology with Mr Rankin - 27 July 2018
Today the children worked with Mr Rankin and the parent helpers.  They made dominoes.  First they had to cut out the blocks and then sand them smooth.  After that they dyed the top of the block then they made holes for the numbers.
It was wonderful to see them working together and supporting each other.
They made 54 domino blocks and they were very proud of their work.
Well done Room 4.

Visitor from Watercare - 26 July 2018

Room 4 - Visitor from Watercare - 26 July 2018
Sally from Watercare came to talk to Room 4.
She talked about water coming from the rain.  She used a jug to warm the water and we could see steam going up.  This is like the sun heating up the water and it turns into a gas called steam or water vapour.  This is called evaporation.
The water goes cold and it turns into water to make clouds.  This is called condensation.
The tiny drops get blown around and they bump together.  She said that is takes two million bumps to make a raindrop.  When they get big and heavy the rain starts.  This is called precipitation.
The water falls down to the sea and this is called collection.
Sally told us that there is enough water in our rivers to fill 40,000 swimming pools.
She told us that the water moves into pipes and it goes to the water filter station to be cleaned.  They add something to the water to clean it.  It takes a whole school day to clean water.  They clean 350 million litres of water each day.

We did an experiment to try to see how we could clean the water.  We had two containers and put them together.  The top one had a hole in the bottom.  We put a filter with bark in the top container and then dirty water inside.  We predicted what would happen to the water.  The bottom container showed dirty water.
Then we put cottonballs inside the top container with the dirty water and it was still brown but not so dirty.
Then we put sand inside the top container with the dirty water and it was brown but not so dirty.
Then we put paper that was ripped up inside the top container and it came out lighter brown.
We worked in two teams to add filters to our containers, we used more than one filter to see what happened.  We left them overnight.
What a great afternoon we had.
