Cultural Week - Term 3 2020

Cultural Week - Term 3 2020
Monday 27 July - Friday 31 July

What an amazing week we have had.  Cultural Week has certainly been a wonderful opportunity to celebrate each others culture.
During lunchtime the students could join the range of exciting activities throughout the school.  In our class we looked at the Maori culture and the Pacific Island culture as well as all the other cultures
in our class.
On Friday the students came to school dressed in their traditional costumes.  We also had an assembly.

Technology or STEM with Mr Rankin - 28/7/20

Technology or STEM with Mr Rankin - 28/7/20

Today the students in Room 4 went to Technology or STEM with Mr Rankin.  STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
The students made dominoes out of wooden blocks.  They were taught about being safe and they know it is very important to work together and wear their safety glasses.
We learned that:
* the mouth holds the mitre box which holds the wood and makes sure our fingers are safe when using the saw.
*we must use the tools in the tools in a safe way.
The students had a toolbox and inside the toolbox was:
*a hammer
*pliers
*measuring tape
*spirit level
*file
*ruler
*pencils
The students had to measure a piece of wood 20cm.
They put the wood in the mitre box and lined up the pencil line with the slot on the mitre box.
Then they sawed the wood.
They sandpapered the edges of the domino pieces to make them smooth.
After that the next thing they had to do was to paint their domino piece and then put a line in the middle of it.
Then when the paint was dry they went to a very special machine to make holes in it.

We now have a great game to use in the classroom, thanks to the children and the wonderful parent support.
Thank you to all the parents who came to help today, we really appreciated your support.

Pacific Island Art - 28/7/20

Pacific Island Art - 28/7/20
The students enjoyed looking at the variety of Pacific Island patterns.  They did some sketches of some of the patterns and then chose two to enlarge.  The students looked closely at the colours that were used to create these patterns.  Using large crayons they illustrated their work and then they used black felt to highlight parts of their work.  Then dye was put on their work.
They feel very proud of their work and so does their teacher.
