Trip to the Auckland Museum

Trip to the Auckland Museum - Thursday 26 May 2022

What an amazing trip we had today.
When we got to the museum we had morning tea outside in the sunshine.  Then we went to look at the Maori canoes, meeting house and all the carvings around the walls.  We took off our shoes and went inside the meeting house and the students talked about what they know about Matariki.  Gabriel told us a story about how the stars got into the sky.  Some of the students were chosen to be part of the story and act it out.  We sang a waiata and did the actions as well.  The students sat around balls of light and these were the stars of Matariki.  We made actions and used instruments for the sounds.  Each child was given a poi and they made a song and dance using the poi.
After that we had lunch then we had time to visit other areas of the museum.

Weaving

 Weaving

One of the activities that is done during Matariki is weaving.
The students worked on using two colours and then they began the weaving process.  After that they designed a pattern and put their weaving under it.

Koru Art

 Koru Art

The students in Room 4 worked on their own koru art.

First we looked at many designs and they did some pencil sketches of how their shapes could look.  Then they chose their favourite one and this was enlarged onto a large piece of paper.  Using pastel they decided on the colours to use and they worked on their koru, leaves and background colours.  Some students blended two colours together by smudging where the koru met.
