Sally from Watercare came to see us today.
She told us that we have lots of water inside our brain - 3/4 of our brain has water. We talked about water being very important for:
*having a bath
*for our plants to grow
*for fish to swim in
*to clean our teeth
*to clean our dishes
*to clean our clothes in the washing machine
*to use the toilet
We have fresh water and it goes dark after we have used it and this is wastewater or sewage. The dirty water goes into the sewage pipe and the pipes join with everyone elses pipes by their houses. Manhole covers the sewage pipes and the pipes take it to the Wastewater Treatment Plant. This water goes into a round reactor clarifier which is 8 metres deep. The good germs eat the bad germs and when the water is clean it goes back into the sea.
Ouside there are drains. Rainwater goes into the drains to stop flooding. Under the drains are pipes to take the water away out to sea. It is important that we don't let rubbish go into the drains as it will go into the sea.
We went outside and in groups we made rivers with boards, rocks, plastic sheets and water. We also had a water competition to see how many rivers we could make.
We did some experiments and mixed some ingredients with water to see what would happen.
We mixed engine oil in the water and then we gave it a shake, it went brown.
Cooking oil and water - the cooking oil stayed at the top
Paint and water - the paint went in as spots and then it turned the colour of the paint when we gave it a shake
Food and water - it all went together
Dishwashing liquid - bubbles appeared when we gave it a shake
It is important to remember that what we put down drains goes into the sea and if the fish don't like it they will die.
