Working with Mrs Hilder

Working with Mrs Hilder - Tuesday 7 May

Today the students worked with Mrs Hilder.  She discussed mini-beasts and the students went on a hunt in the hive to see if they could find some.   They made a wormery or a mini worm farm so they can observe the worms behaviours for a short time and then we will take them to the hive and find a great place for them to live.

This is what the students found out:

*Mini-beasts are invertebrates, they don't have a backbone.

*Mini-beasts help plants to grow.

*Butterflies pollinate the plants.

*Bees make honey.

*Plants that are carnivorous eat mini-beasts.

*Mini-beasts live in rivers, gardens, ponds, rainforests, swamps, forests, the underground and deserts.

This is from Mrs Hilder:

We had such fun learning about mini-beasts together!

In the first block we EXPLORED and learnt about the different mini-beasts we have in New Zealand. We learnt what they look like, what they eat and where they live. We then went on a scavenger hunt in the hive to see which mini-beasts we could find and where they were living or 'hiding'.

In the middle block we had HANDS ON experiences.

We then got our own worms... we watched them, touched them and looked if we could find the different parts of the body. We loved learning about these wiggly creatures. We played a mini-beasts and predator game outside with our buddies, we had to act like our favourite mini-beast and escape from the predator that would eat us.. like birds.

In the last block we REFLECTED on our learning for the day. We drew our favourite mini-beast after looking at the structure of the different mini-beasts, we also had to include a background to show where they live.

Enjoy looking at the photos:
